This month in the funny books is dominated by Marvel’s Secret War! Damn I’m trying not to get sucked in just because I don’t want to spend a ton of money. I have bought a few, and a couple titles that are event cross-overs, but I think I’ll wait for the graphic novel to dive into this.
Week 1 ⇔ 5/6/15
Alright with Secret Wars #1 it kicks off this Marvel event for the rest of the month. Tons of titles crossing over and even multiple new titles starting up. After this event Marvel is ending all their series and relaunching them. Deep down I might not really be into it because I don’t want the Marvel Universe to change. Rat Queens Vol.2 The Far Reaching Tentacles Of N’rygoth is the 2nd graphic novel to come out. I haven’t dove into too many Rat Queens but I think it’s pretty cool. Great concept, really fun, and graphic novels are a great way to catch up on series you’re not buying religiously. Honorable mentions: Return Of The Living Deadpool #4 finishing that Deadpool mini-series and Dead Drop #1 a new Valiant series that sounds pretty promising.
Week 2 ⇔ 5/13/15
Howard The Duck #3 is feeling a lot better for me, and has gave me hope for this series. It was just announced that Howard The Duck’s writer Chip Zdarsky is going to do the new Jughead comic. That is going to be pretty interesting to see him tackle Archie’s friend. Mantle #1 is a new series from Image that sounds pretty cool. Some kid Robbie is randomly chosen with the power of The Mantle after he is struck by lightning. Okay that’s all well and good, except the assassin that has killed Mantle hosts for over 50 years is already on his way! Honorable mentions: Mythic #1, Night Nurse #1, and Puppet Master #3. I can barely find the Puppet Master comics anywhere, not many shops in my area has been stocking these bad boys.
Week 3 ⇔ 5/20/15
Mad Max Fury Road Nux and Immortal Joe #1, dude Mad Max Fury Road was such a great movie! Now DC comics has more of the great characters in the Mad Max world. I hope George Miller makes many more sequels. Deadpool’s Secret Secret Wars #1, ha this is a pretty funny poke at the Secret Wars event. Except it’s Deadpool in the original 1984 Secret Wars series. Honorable mentions: Archie Vs Predator #2, Insufferable #1, Master Of Kung Fu #1, Maxx Maxximized Deluxe Edition #1, and Planet Hulk #1.
Week 4 ⇔ 5/27/15
Fight Club 2 #1 is more tales of the beloved characters from the film Fight Club. Like most people, I’m a big fan of the film. I read the Free Comic Book Day sample of Fight Club 2 now I’m ready to give this a try. Have a lot of faith in this because writer Chuck Palahniuk is on board writing this as well. Infinity Gauntlet #1, the original was back in my childhood when I used to buy comics, so this series has a lot of nostalgia for me. Gerry Duggan is penning this reboot. Thanos is a great villain. Honorable mentions: Chew #49, Edward Scissorhands Vol.1 Graphic Novel, M.O.D.O.K. Assassin #1, Old Man Logan #1, Secret Wars 2099 #1, Where Monsters Dwell #1, and Zombie Tramp Vs Vampblade #1.
One of the cool things Marvel is doing with the Secret Wars event is having action figure variants! I bought 2 of these so far, the black suit Spider-Man and Deadpool ones. They even have rounded corners on the front page looking like action figure blister cards! I think I like these covers more than the event itself.
